How Lockdown Gave Clarity to Latest Team Member!

Sam and Aynsley

We are delighted to announce that Sam Tasker-Grindley will be joining the Clarity team on Monday 13 July 2020 as Head of Member Success. Sam trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Dixon Wilson in London and joins us from RSM UK where he was Advisory Associate Director in their Leeds office. He brings with him a wealth and depth of practice experience across all areas of accounting. Including: practice development, business advisory, small business support and technology implementation.

After being furloughed and, not one for sitting around, he co-founded two innovative and hugely impactful organisations; Furlonteer and Studenteer, supporting thousands of charities and furloughed workers to great acclaim and media attention.

Sam writes about his experience and thoughts on Clarity:

“I was furloughed on 1 April and I’ve had 100 days to slow right down. This made me reflect on what I want to do in my career and to find clarity in my decision making. This was never going to be a time to binge watch series on Netflix, or perfect my banana bread. This was an opportunity to try something new. To push myself out of my comfort zone. And to learn as much as I can out of this entirely unique situation we find ourselves in.

I will forever be proud of what I’ve achieved in lockdown. I’ve co-founded two ventures (Furlonteer and Studenteer), supported thousands of charities, furloughed workers and students; appeared on TV twice; and now I’m making a complete career change.

When I started my ACA qualification 8 years ago, I’d have never believed I would still be working in practice today. For me, it was always going to be a stepping stone to something else. ‘If I go and gain a strong finance background, it can take me anywhere’. But each time an opportunity came to turn my back on the profession, I felt compelled to stay to help change an industry that has moved on so little since the 1500s.

Sam Tasker-Grindley

I firmly believe that now is the most exciting time to be an accountant. Innovation is coming at a rapid pace. New technology is being introduced all of the time, which is leading the profession to automate compliance where possible, and focus more on advisory. Never have businesses needed support and advice from their accountants more than in this moment. With the economy currently being pumped up by the ‘steroids’ that is the Job Retention Scheme, a long-lasting recession seems inevitable once that disappears.

Accountants key to recovery

Accountants will have a key part to play in the survival of their clients. Turning numbers into forecasts, business plans and strategies to not just survive, but even to thrive. I am excited to be joining the trail-blazing team at Clarity, whose mission is to do exactly that. By working closely with accountants, we can help businesses better understand their numbers and put in plans of how to improve them. The accounting industry needs this tool and so do small businesses.

So I will finally be losing the suit and tie and invest in some comfortable jeans and bright white trainers. I could not be more ready to embark on the next stage of my journey. I’m keen to embrace a new culture and different challenges. This is somewhere I know I can flourish and where my skills can be put to best use.

At the beginning of lockdown I asked myself to find some clarity. Clarity is exactly what I got.”

Head of member success

We are so pleased that Sam got Clarity and are excited to see him start! He will be responsible for heading up the team helping our members achieve success, not just with Clarity, but within their own practices and for their clients. We can’t wait to see what he brings to #TeamClarity from his experience at Furlonteer/Studenteer and his years in accounting, driving innovation and change.
